PAINTING
The Dayspring From on High has Visited Us!
I painted this for Mosaic Church for the occasion of Advent in 2012, the five anticipatory weeks leading up to Christmas. This painting is a symbolic rendering of Jesus Christ, the "Dayspring" (Luke 1:78) and the "Branch of Jesse" (Isaiah 11:1), entering into our world as an infant. The five paintings below represented themes for each week of Advent in the church talk series for that year. For this project, I felt God's Holy Spirit work through me as never before, which was an incredible honor.

Girl From Kliptown
(CLOSE-UP OF PAINTING)
Acrylics
2006 18 X 22" NFS (Donated to LOOM International) I met this little girl in "Kliptown," a famous township within Soweto near Johannesburg, on a two-week field trip with NieuCommunities. Very soft-spoken and furtive, she held my hand for the length of a few hours' tour around her neighborhood. I felt blessed to be so immediately and tenaciously "adopted" by her and though I didn't get her name, I will never forget this first little South African Sister of mine. |
A New Day in Block R
Acrylics
2006 22 X 14" NFS (Donated to Door to Grace) This little girl resides in Soshanguve, a township just outside of Pretoria, the city where NieuCommunities is located. The neighborhoods in "Sosh" are split up into sections, or "blocks," from A to Z. I painted this and "Girl from Kliptown" after my first visit to South Africa in August of 2006. After spending 2007 as a program apprentice, I joined staff and lived in Pretoria through much of 2010. By the end of my time there, many of our contacts in Sosh had became my dearest friends. |
